About this chopping board
Ash is a pale, elastic timber with a clear, flowing grain. It is lighter than walnut and oak, which makes this 400 × 280 mm board easy to pick up and carry between worktop and sink.
The edge-grain construction is stable and sensible for daily use where it is washed, dried and oiled regularly. The surface is smooth and the long strips show the character of the timber.
It is a good first board for anyone moving from plastic or bamboo to timber.
Craft details
Strips are chosen for even colour, glued, flattened and sanded before the edges are eased and the board is oiled.
Care guidance
- Wipe or wash with a cloth, warm water and a little mild detergent straight after use. Rinse and dry with a cloth.
- Stand the board on its edge to air-dry so both faces dry at the same rate, away from radiators and direct sunlight.
- Do not soak the board, put it in a dishwasher or leave it sitting in water. Uneven moisture is the usual cause of warping and splits.
- Re-oil with food-safe mineral oil or a board conditioner when the surface looks dry or pale, usually monthly at first.
- Treat odours and stains with coarse salt and half a lemon, then rinse, dry and re-oil.
- Use separate surfaces for raw products and ready-to-eat food, and clean thoroughly with hot, soapy water between uses.
