About this chopping board
Walnut brings depth of colour to a kitchen. This edge-grain board has the same footprint as our ash board, in a richer timber with a fine texture and gentle variation in tone.
It is a good surface for knives: firm enough to be stable, with enough give to be kind to a fine edge. Its dark face is forgiving of marks and stains.
It also works for presentation. Warm bread or a pile of roasted vegetables looks good on it.
Craft details
Strips are balanced for colour across the board, glued, flattened and sanded. The edges are eased and the board is oiled until the grain is saturated.
Care guidance
- Wipe or wash with a cloth, warm water and a little mild detergent straight after use. Rinse and dry with a cloth.
- Stand the board on its edge to air-dry so both faces dry at the same rate, away from radiators and direct sunlight.
- Do not soak the board, put it in a dishwasher or leave it sitting in water. Uneven moisture is the usual cause of warping and splits.
- Re-oil with food-safe mineral oil or a board conditioner when the surface looks dry or pale, usually monthly at first.
- Treat odours and stains with coarse salt and half a lemon, then rinse, dry and re-oil.
- Use separate surfaces for raw products and ready-to-eat food, and clean thoroughly with hot, soapy water between uses.
