About this chopping board
A small board is useful in any kitchen. This one is the right size for slicing lemons, cutting a piece of cheese, preparing a single clove of garlic or trimming herbs without having to bring out a larger board.
It is made from edge-grain maple, pale and smooth, and weighs under a kilogram, so it is easy to pick up and rinse.
It also works as a small serving board for bread or snacks.
Craft details
Strips are glued, flattened and sanded, then the edges are eased and a small finger notch is cut so it can be lifted easily off a flat surface.
Care guidance
- Wipe or wash with a cloth, warm water and a little mild detergent straight after use. Rinse and dry with a cloth.
- Stand the board on its edge to air-dry so both faces dry at the same rate, away from radiators and direct sunlight.
- Do not soak the board, put it in a dishwasher or leave it sitting in water. Uneven moisture is the usual cause of warping and splits.
- Re-oil with food-safe mineral oil or a board conditioner when the surface looks dry or pale, usually monthly at first.
- Treat odours and stains with coarse salt and half a lemon, then rinse, dry and re-oil.
- Use separate surfaces for raw products and ready-to-eat food, and clean thoroughly with hot, soapy water between uses.
