About this chopping board
This small end-grain board has the same checkerboard surface as our larger boards in a footprint that fits almost any kitchen. Ash is pale and slightly open-grained, giving a lighter look than walnut.
It is thick enough to stay steady and compact enough to be easy to handle. A good board for fruit, vegetables and small jobs, and a good way to see whether end-grain suits the way you cook.
It needs to be oiled generously when new and then whenever the surface looks dry.
Craft details
Strips are cross-cut and re-laid to show the end grain, flattened and sanded, then oiled by hand until the fibres stop absorbing.
Care guidance
- Wipe or wash with a cloth, warm water and a little mild detergent straight after use. Rinse and dry with a cloth.
- End grain absorbs more than a long-grain surface. Oil generously when new, then whenever the surface starts to look dry, often every few weeks at first.
- Stand the board on its edge to air-dry, away from radiators and direct sunlight. Never soak it or put it in a dishwasher.
- Turn the board regularly so wear is spread evenly across both faces, and keep both faces oiled to the same degree.
- Treat odours and stains with coarse salt and half a lemon, then rinse, dry and re-oil.
- Use separate surfaces for raw products and ready-to-eat food, and clean thoroughly with hot, soapy water between uses.
