About this chopping board
Maple is the classic board timber: pale, hard and tight-grained, with very little visible pore structure. In an end-grain format it makes a smooth, quiet cutting surface.
At 350 × 250 mm it suits most kitchens and fits beside a hob or on a small worktop. It is thick enough to be stable but light enough to move to the sink.
As with all end-grain boards, regular oiling keeps the fibres supple and helps stop the surface from drying out.
Craft details
The board is assembled from selected strips, cross-cut and re-laid, then flattened and sanded before oiling. No two checkerboard patterns are identical.
Care guidance
- Wipe or wash with a cloth, warm water and a little mild detergent straight after use. Rinse and dry with a cloth.
- End grain absorbs more than a long-grain surface. Oil generously when new, then whenever the surface starts to look dry, often every few weeks at first.
- Stand the board on its edge to air-dry, away from radiators and direct sunlight. Never soak it or put it in a dishwasher.
- Turn the board regularly so wear is spread evenly across both faces, and keep both faces oiled to the same degree.
- Treat odours and stains with coarse salt and half a lemon, then rinse, dry and re-oil.
- Use separate surfaces for raw products and ready-to-eat food, and clean thoroughly with hot, soapy water between uses.
